Lake Tekapo’s scenery is breathtaking – it’s the combination of the turquoise lake, the exquisite Church of the Good Shepherd, snow-capped Southern Alps and the clear air, which is reputed to be the clearest air in the Southern Hemisphere. There are several star gazing tours to choose from plus scenic flight operators. Tekapo Springs is an all season attraction with hot pools, snow tubing and ice skating available in the winter plus a water slide operational in the summer months. Lake Tekapo is an easy 25 minute drive away from our motel.

Bring your appetite when you come to Geraldine, because you’ll definitely want to sample some of the town’s speciality foods. Cheese, chocolate and the internationally recognised Barker’s fruit products are just some of the treats on offer. Geraldine also has a range of walking tracks suitable for all ages.

Lake Opuha is a man-made lake with an island in the middle and is very popular for fishing and boating. There are picnic areas and public toilets available. The dam, at its southern end, is quite spectacular especially if water is being spilled from the lake.

Framed by rugged, stunning mountainscapes, Aoraki/Mount Cook Village is perfectly positioned to take advantage of some very spectacular scenery. There are numerous walking tracks suitable for a range of age groups plus the Edmund Hillary Museum. The nearby Tasman Terminal Lake, with its huge icebergs, is an easy 1.5 hour drive away from Mt Dobson Motel.

Timaru is the fourth largest town in the South Island so has a full range of shops and amenities including an airport with daily flights to and from Wellington. The airport is only a 40 minute drive away from Mt Dobson Motel.

If you arrive in Timaru when the sun is shining, it probably won’t be long before you are heading down to Caroline Bay. Holiday makers have been flocking to this beach for over 100 years; it is one of New Zealand’s safest swimming beaches and has plenty of other attractions including an aviary, children’s paddling pool, playground and of course the famous Caroline Bay Christmas carnival.

Less than 5kms away from the beginning of the ski field access road

This is skiing at your doorstep. We are the closest motel to Mt Dobson ski area with a driving time of 30 minutes between our car park and the ski field car park. Mt Dobson ski area boasts all day sunshine and prides itself on offering a fun skiing and snowboarding experience for all ages. Ski and snow board hire is available ‘on the mountain’ or in the village of Fairlie (5 minutes drive away from us).

The ski area usually operates from the beginning of July through to the end of September.
